Dr. Ferdinand Porsche founded the Porsche company in the early 1930s and his skills as an engineer and a designer were quickly noticed; so much so in fact that he was commissioned by the German government to design a Peoples' car or a Volkswagen; his design became the now famous Volkswagen Beetle. After success with the Beetle, Dr. Ferdinand designed the very first Porsche automobile, the Type 64 in 1939 just before the start of WWII in Europe. Production was halted in the early 1940s due to the war effort and after the war, Dr. Ferdinand was briefly imprisoned. These series of misfortunes for Dr. Porsche resulted in his son Ferry Porsche taking control of vehicle design at his father's company. This change in creative control would lead directly to the famous Porsche 356, and later, the most famous Porsche of all time, the venerable 911.
