The original Land Rover was the Series I, designed in 1948 by Rover engineer Maurice Wilks. The vehicle was unique in that it utilized an aluminum alloy outer skin which was resistant to corrosion and deterioration. This feature gave the vehicle excellent longevity and was one of the aspects of the Land Rover that customers came to appreciate. Some 10 years after the Series I was first introduced to the motoring world, the Series II made its debut in 1958 and offered improvements over many of the existing features, such as larger displacement engines for additional power. The practicality and usefulness of these original Land Rover vehicles allowed the company to become what it is today. Worldwide sales and extensive service in not only the private sector but the military sector as well allowed the Land Rover business to constantly expand, and it is now a maker of some of the world's finest luxury SUVs.
